DESTINY'S WAY
PART FIVE OF THE TITLES SERIES

Part B

It was spring and everything was blooming in Smallville. Whitney frowned as he wandered around the Manor. Caterers, decorators, musicians were all moving in and out as they made the final preparations for the ‘Union Ceremony’ as his mother called it. Marriage was taboo with her, she was too Catholic to be that liberal, but she supported the whole affair with her heart. In fact the planner Lionel had hired to oversee this carnival and she had come to loggerheads several times. For Whitney it had long since ceased to be about Lex and him and more about how large a party could be thrown.

His own mind was focused on the event planned for the following afternoon. He’d wanted a DJ and a wild party, but Lionel and his mother had joined forces to overrule his opinion. Whitney had held his ground and indeed a DJ would be present after the reception. He wanted to dance at his own wedding and he was not going to do it to the chamber orchestra that was playing during the ceremony and before. He was only twenty-three and he damned well was going to have fun for this public spectacle.

All the rented furniture for the reception was being delivered as well as all the food and alcohol. Gardeners were still molding the lawns into a proper venue for an outdoor ceremony. It was early May and perfect for this event, but he really wanted it over as soon as possible. Allowing Lionel to have his way had turned into a huge mistake. Whitney was thankful that Lex had kept the ‘dignitaries’ down to a minimum. As it was almost everyone Whit went to school with was invited along with tons of Lex’s associates. It was the Circus Maximus and Whitney was the main draw.

He stopped at the stairs and gazed to the closed door of Lex’s office and finally admitted that he was far more preoccupied by what was going on in there than he was by everything else. Lex was having a chat with Clark Kent at Clark’s request. Whitney always felt insecure when that name was mentioned in relation to Lex. He still was jealous on some levels and he did his best to keep it all in perspective. Knowing something and believing it as faith were two different things though. Whit frowned and climbed the stairs to the bedroom. It was the only haven in the Manor at the moment.

Lex leaned back in his chair and watched Clark pace the floor of his office. It brought back so many memories, some pleasant and some not so much. Lex had no idea why Clark requested the meeting, but he had. His mind drifted to all the things that needed his attention, including his hero lover, but he’d made time for his old friend. “Clark, while I miss our talks on some level, I’m busy and time is precious. Besides, you are wearing out a path in my carpet.”

Clark stopped and frowned. He moved and took a seat opposite Lex across the desk. “Do you…regret…how we ended?”

“As I recall it was you who called it off. So in some respect there is bitterness, but regret is not the proper term.” Lex frowned and went with his instinct. “Do you?”

Clark ran a hand through his hair and looked down. “I wonder sometimes, especially in the last year or so.” Clark looked up and tried to smile. “I’m happy for you, I really am…I just feel like a fool.”

Lex was lost suddenly. Clark had dumped him for reasons that Lex had never been able to fathom and in the end had moved back to Metropolis in order to gain the needed distance. Now Clark looked desolate about that decision and Lex didn’t know how to respond. “I don’t know what to say.”

“I guess you can say I’m an idiot.” Clark looked away and frowned. “Or that I’m just young and confused.”

Lex tapped a finger on his desk and shook his head. “I still don’t know why you ended the relationship. You just told me it was over and that you couldn’t do it anymore. I think the second excuse was you were already a freak and that you didn’t want people to find out that you were a fag as well.”

“Okay, I was stupid.” Clark frowned. “Lex, I’m sorry and you’ll never know how sorry I am. I…that time we spent together is precious to me. I was able to feel free and you didn’t care that I was a dork.”

“This conversation is baffling Clark. You know, I’m sure Whitney is paranoid about what we are, well, you are talking about right now. You made a choice and things have changed. Whitney and I have been together for over a year and a half. He really helped me get over the pain and emptiness you caused me, Clark.”

Sheepishly, Clark replied, “I’m sorry.”

“That’s not the point. You and I are on different paths now. Your choice changed how you deal with your life. It changed how I dealt with mine.” Lex paused and took a sip of water. “On the anniversary of his heroic feat, he was trying not to feel guilty about surviving or wishing it never happened. Whitney almost died and lost his dreams and yet he felt guilty for his feelings for what happened after that fact. Life happens Clark and we live with the consequences of every action.”

“So I can’t apologize?”

“It’s no longer about an apology or you regretting your decision. It is far beyond that. Events were set in motion and created new combinations and new outcomes. Can I ask you something Clark?”

Clark nodded and audibly gulped.

“Why are you really here? It has to be more than an apology.”

“I just wanted to know if you were honestly happy. I think about what might have been and I realized that I hurt you…and me deeply.” Clark bowed his head again and sniffed. He looked up and his eyes reflected inner pain. “Just hard to understand that I made the worst mistake of my life while in high school.”

Lex sighed. “This is a strange conversation. Frankly I should be upset with you for the way you treated me back then, but things worked out in the end. Well, for me at least.” He paused and leaned forward across the desk. “Clark, you’ll find someone to love again, but you have to put the past behind you. I forgive you. You were young and I was idealistic. I was too old for you and you were a virgin. The timing was all wrong.”

Clark laughed for a second. “Well that is one way to look at it.” Clark sobered and frowned. “I am glad you’re happy, Lex. It was just a shock to see what might have been.”

“That is a false assumption Clark. Who I was then might not be who I am now. You and I, lots of passion, but woefully short on common ground. Besides, your father hates me.” Lex arched his eyebrows daring Clark to contradict him.

Standing Clark offered his hand. “I wish you all the best, Lex. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Lex walked around the desk and pulled Clark into a hug. “Regrets are never easy to live with Clark. Let it go and enjoy college. I know you’re pretty good in the sack, or were.”

Clark stepped back and smiled again. “Better than Whitney?”

Lex shook his head and laughed as well. “Why don’t you pick up a marine tomorrow and find out for yourself?”

Clark laughed freely for the first time. “Later, Lex. Thanks for the chat.”

Lex walked Clark to the front door and then climbed the stairs to the master bedroom. He opened the door and smiled at the form of his lover spread out on the bed clad in only boxer-briefs and snoring quietly. Lex was amazed that Whitney could sleep with all the noise from people rushing around and screaming outside, but Lex thought it was a good idea. He stepped out of his clothes and lay down next to his lover.

Lex moved close to Whitney and was happy to have an arm thrown over his chest. He snuggled closely and liked that he was open with Whitney. He wasn’t tired, but wanted to be close to his lover. He had never entertained the idea of being open with a male lover, but he was and he felt free.

“You’re thinking too hard. I can hear the gears grinding,” Whitney mumbled huskily as he stretched. “Clark go home?”

Lex turned and placed a hand on Whitney’s chest. “He’s gone.” Lex could tell by the expression on Whitney’s face that he wanted more of an explanation than that. “He came by to tell me he was sorry and he’s an idiot.”

Whit shifted and rolled his neck and then his muscles to get them to relax. He’d taken up yoga in the last few months to keep his muscles as limber as possible. It also helped him control his temper. “Well, he did dump you so that covers him being an idiot.” Whitney rolled out of bed and reached for his shorts. Lex’s hand stopped him from buttoning them.

“Wait, come back here.” He tugged Whitney and he fell on the bed with a pop. “I don’t want to deal with the zoo just yet and you look pissed.” Lex arched an eyebrow and waited for a reply.

“He calls and you go running. Look, I know it’s not logical, but when I see him and you together I…”

“Get jealous,” Lex concluded for him. “In case you didn’t notice it has been you and me for over a year and half now. And tomorrow you get that platinum ring on your finger that tells everyone to back off. It tells everyone the same thing on this end.”

Whitney rolled on his back and listened to people yelling on the lawn below the window. “He wants you back.”

“I told him to pick up a marine tomorrow and he’ll forget all about me.” Lex started smiling at Whitney’s shocked expression. “What can I say, I found a marine that made me forget about everything else.”

Chuckling, Whitney leaned up and kissed Lex. “If you say so. I’m hungry and I want to get out of here.”

Lex got off the bed and offered a hand to Whitney. “Then we shall head over to your mother’s house and beg for lunch.”

“Be careful what you wish for, she thinks you are too thin as it is.” Whitney winked and walked to the bathroom.

“Just what I need, someone else to harp on me to eat!”

Whitney tugged on his tails and straightened his vest again. His mother had forced him to get a haircut and he'd acquiesced. It was not a military style, but shorter than it had been since he’d been discharged. He checked his cufflinks again and teared up for a second. His mom had given him his dad’s set. She said that they had been a gift from her to his dad when Whitney had been born.

He wiped at his eyes and appraised his reflection for a second. He straightened his box tie again and noted from the wall clock that he still had fifteen minutes. Whitney hated that he was walking down the aisle, but Lex insisted. Lex was indeed wearing a kilt with a tux/tails top. He’d modeled the whole outfit for Whitney days ago and Whitney was still curious if Lex was going to wear it as a real Scotsman would.

A knock on his door made him turn away from the mirror. Whitney fought a frown when he saw it was Clark Kent. “Hi, what can I do for you?”

Clark stared at Whitney for a second. “Wow, you look great. I…wow, last time I saw you was that football game.” Clark looked down and then back. He offered his hand and smiled. “I wanted to wish you luck.”

Whitney took the hand and smiled at Clark. “Thanks.” He paused for a second and then smiled wickedly. “Lex didn’t tell me everything you two discussed, but he did say that you should hook up with a marine.” Whitney was gratified to see Clark blush. “There are a few here and I think one right up your alley.”

Clark tried to stammer out a response, but couldn’t. Whit took pity on him and patted him on the back. “It’s time for me to get out there. I’ll introduce you to Trent at the reception.”

Clark departed and Whitney spent a few seconds making sure he looked perfect. He left the guest bedroom and walked down the stairs at a precise crisp pace. A smile graced his face as he saw all the decorations around the house for this event. Schooling his features into a serene smile, he headed for the patio doors. They were open and he could see the field next to the lake full of people seated and listening to the live music. He took a deep breath and smiled as Lex walked up the platform. The Justice of the Peace was waiting for him up there.

Whitney walked to the back of the aisle. Lex looked stunning in his outfit. It was perfect for the whole affair and Whitney could not wait to find out if Lex had been teasing him or not. The music shifted, but it was not the “Wedding march” that was played, but something else that Whitney could not place. It was another thing his mother and Lionel had agreed upon. He continued his own form of ‘parade’ march down the aisle and was met by Lex. The Justice was an old family friend of the Fordman’s and he gave Whitney a nod and started the civil ceremony.

“So it is with great fanfare that I toast my son and his partner on their happy day. May you achieve the greatness that is your due.” Lionel raised his champagne glass and so did rest of the guests.

Lex rolled his eyes and squeezed Whitney’s hand under the table. He nodded at his father and stood up to make another round of the room. People were eating and chatting, but he wanted to spend time with a few special people. He saw Whitney get up and head over to a tall stocky man sitting at a table on the patio.

Whitney sat down and waved at everyone at the table. The sun felt good, but he really wanted to get out of his tux. “Hi Trent. How are things?” He motioned for the tall wide bodied man to get up and the walked a few feet away from the tables so no one could overhear their conversation.

“Good, Fordman. I know they are good for you.”

Whitney grinned and clapped him on the back. “Remember that favor you owe me for saving your ass in Bangkok?” Whitney smiled at the hesitant nod from his former platoon mate. “Well I have someone I want to introduce you to later. He’s about six feet five dark hair, really pretty.”

“Man, I hate you. Just because I like pretty boys…”

Whitney cut off his friend. “You’ll like him. He’s confused, innocent, blushes at the drop of a hat, and is a good ol’ farmboy.”

Trent’s warm brown eyes lit up and he licked his lips. “Well if that's the case then I think I can repay that debt.” He grabbed Whitney’s hand and shook it. Trent would have been the perfect offensive lineman in the NFL if he hadn’t gone to the Corps. His large hand made Whitney’s look small. “I’ll let you introduce us later.”

Whitney nodded and walked back to the table and chatted with a few other former marines. He spotted his mother heading in his direction and told the table he’d try to swing by again later. He had made it two steps back into the house when his mother was at his elbow. “Hi mom.”

“Whitney, you need to make a round of the party.” She patted his shoulder and gave a hug to a family friend who walked up.

He moved away quickly hoping to escape, but was pulled into a circle of people by Lionel. ‘Someone shoot me!

Whitney fell face first on the bed and moaned. Lex collapsed next to him. Whit rolled over and lifted Lex’s kilt and smiled. “So you did go sans underwear. Naughty boy! I’m glad I didn’t know because I’d have bent you over and…”

Lex leaned over and placed a finger over Whitney’s lips. “As much as I would like to hear what lovely things you would have done to my ass, my head hurts from too much champagne, my feet hurt from dancing and standing, and my hand hurts from all the shaking.”

Whit slid lower and removed Lex’s shoes and socks. He started rubbing one foot and then another. Every so often he would pause at the gleam of the ring on his finger. He patted one of Lex’s calves and slowly took off his own shoes and socks. He moved back up towards the headboard and pulled Lex close. “Despite all my aches, pains, and endlessly bad conversation, I’m very happy.”

Snuggling closer, Lex nodded. “You however are in trouble with Jonathan and Martha Kent. That brick wall of a man that you introduced Clark to apparently was quite taken with the young Mr. Kent.” Lex chuckled for a second. “I think Jonathan was amazed that someone could make Clark look puny.”

“Oh, poor Clark, if Trent is having his way right now, Clark’s legs are in the air and his ass is being split in half by a cock that is as wide as Trent is.” Whitney started laughing. “Trent likes pretty boys.”

Lex sat up quickly and frowned. “You would know this how?”

Whitney shrugged and kissed Lex. “I never had sex with him, but I did see that cock in the showers and once in a circle jerk. The boy is not natural.” Whitney draped himself across Lex and kissed him again. “But enough about everyone else, it’s our wedding night. I think we need to consummate it.”

Lex started to unbutton Whitney’s shirt when there was a knock on the door. Lex frowned and went and opened it. Lionel came walking in with a small stack of papers. “I’m glad that you are still relatively decent. These are for the two of you.”

Lex flipped through them and sank into a chair. He motioned for his dad to take the other one. “Could this have not waited for a week or two?”

“No, I want to elevate your public standing at once and by naming you as Luthor Corp president next week it highlights that standing. Also the legal paperwork that places Whitney as the secondary heir validates his standing legally.” Lionel smiled. “Civil Unions don’t have all the automatic legal protections of marriage, but this fills in a gap.” Lionel reached into his pocket and tossed some keys at Whitney. “In the parking garage of your building is my gift to you. No more truck, I’m replacing it with…well wait until you see it.”

Lex dropped his head into his hands. “Anything else dad?”

Lionel stood up and nodded. “Yes, but we’ll address them when you get back from Belize. Good night gentlemen.” He left.

Whitney looked up from the bed and started laughing. “You may think I’m crazy, but I’m beginning to think he has a playbook on your life and he’s just checking things off now.”

Lex moved back to the bed. “The keys to the kingdom are on the table as well as your official welcome papers. Below us are people cleaning up from our wedding party. All orchestrated by my father. Whatever he has planned, it’s serious.”

Whitney straddled Lex and ran a hand up under the kilt. “Enough about your dad, this night is all about us.”
